The “MOT” stands for the Ministry of Transport. Decades ago, they set the standard for the material used to build road sub-bases. While the Ministry has changed its name, the aggregate standard stuck.

When you run a compactor over it, it binds into a solid, load-bearing surface that won’t shift under the weight of a car.
